Reconnecting with Nature for Wellness
What is Forest Bathing?
Forest bathing, known as “shinrin-yoku” in Japanese, is the practice of immersing oneself in a forest environment to promote physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. It involves leisurely walking or simply being present in a forest, engaging all the senses to fully experience the natural surroundings. If you are not lucky enough to be close to a forest, just go to a park or wooded area and be quiet and observe. Let the awareness of the trees be present.
The Japanese Meaning:
“Shinrin” translates to “forest,” while “yoku” means “bath.” Together, “shinrin-yoku” can be interpreted as “taking in the forest atmosphere” or “forest bathing.”
Benefits of Forest Bathing:
- Reduced Stress: Forest bathing has been shown to lower cortisol levels, reducing stress and promoting relaxation.
- Improved Immune Function: Breathing in phytoncides, natural compounds emitted by trees, can enhance the immune system.
- Enhanced Mood: Being in nature can boost mood and alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression.
- Increased Energy Levels: Spending time in forests can revitalize the body and increase energy levels.
- Heightened Creativity: Nature has a calming effect that can stimulate creativity and problem-solving abilities.
- Adds Diversity to Microbiome: Being in Nature increases our intake of external microbes. We breathe them in through our nose, our skin and if we touch the soil or plant life we absorb their microbes with our touch( our hands and our feet). So try walking barefoot in the woods and share your microbes with Nature.
